Are strolling tables female?

A living table creates the illusion of a glamorous women in a giant dress which also happens to function as a table. Costuming a male performer in traditional male clothing, such as a suit, can detract from the idea that this is a large dress. We are left with a man simply surrounded by a table, not quite as magical. It’s much more effective to either cast a female performer, or, for fun-loving clients, a male drag queen performer to appear in the strolling table dress.

Not to say we can’t go for a more gender-fluid or non-binary look with a man in a dress. It’s just important to remember that is is a big dress so choose a character that you want in dress. Man in a dress: fabulous! Man in a suit surrounded a table: no illusion.

Various television shows have featured strolling tables as additions to weddings and special events. Event planner David Tutera, on his television shows “My Fair Wedding” and “Celebrations” suggested enhancing a wedding celebration with costumed performers and serving dessert on a strolling table. What kind of events are strolling tables suited for?

They have appeared at country clubs, yacht clubs, golf clubs, and other private clubs such as the Princeton Club, The Metropolitan Club, The Core Club, and the University Club. Strolling Tables are a great addition to events at large luxury venues such as Cipriani 42nd Street, Capitale, and Gotham Hall, They have appeared at many grand event spaces including the New York Public Library and the American Museum of Natural History.

What should I serve on a strolling table?

Strolling tables generally appear during cocktail hour or dessert time.

For the start of an event suggested items include hors d'oeuvres, a specialty cocktail, or a welcoming glass of champagne. Remember, small finger foods (canapés) are best. Avoid foods that are messy, must remain heated, or require serving utensils. Discuss this with your caterer.

For dessert consider something small but special like petit fours, macarons, gourmet cupcakes, or fancy chocolates. For kids parties many clients prefer parfaits or old fashioned candy. Do not load up your lovely table girl with ice cream, a punchbowl, or a chocolate fountain, that is just asking for a disaster.

You may want to avoid food altogether and use your walking table to present seating cards. Place cards can either be presented upon entry to to cocktail hour or during the transition from cocktails to dinner.

What preparations and requirements are needed to incorporate a strolling table into my event?

Placement: It is best to plan in advance where you would like the strolling table to be stationed. If she’s greeting guests in the lobby make sure there is room to walk around her. Also check that she is well lit. Remember, you want your gorgeous greeter to look lovely in photos. If she will be making a surprise entrance at dessert make sure there is enough space her to enter the room and glide to the dance floor. There must be a wide entrance and a space large than 5 feet between table for her to get through your guests. A large catering hall can easily accommodate, A small restaurant may need to spend some time thinking of a solution.

Dressing Room: A private or semi-private room must be set aside for the performer to get into costume and makeup. This room should have a table, chairs, adequate lighting, and be kept to a comfortable temperature. Food and beverages should be provided for talent and production staff. Expect the crew to arrive at least 2 hours before showtime.

Setup Area: While the performer gets prepared in the dressing room the technician will assemble the strolling table in an area with easy access to the presentation area. The Strolling table is 5 feet wide and once it’s assembled in will not move through small doorways/walkways or up/down steps. It must be assembled away from the guests view but in a place with easy access. The strolling table will usually enter from a large doorway with double doors or from behind a retractable wall or a pipe-and-drape.

Contact and Communication: It’s important that the production crew are in communication with the venue management. When they arrive they will need to know where to set up, where to find the green room, etc. They should also have a phone number for the catering manager to assure that someone is assigned to prepare items to be serves, how to place it, etc. This is all very important, no one should have to bother you about these details during your event.
